Description:

This one-day seminar is designed for universities, research institutes, ethics officers, companies, public officials and individual researchers. It will be particularly helpful for applicants in the field of EU-funded research and innovation who require a timely debriefing on the role of ethics as a legal requirement for selection and funding in the framework of the Horizon 2020 programme.

Whether you are experienced in EU funding programmes or not, this event will cover what you need to know, as well as topics of particular interest to researchers specialising in health research, clinical trials, drug development, security research and the collection of personal data for research purposes. With research in the fields of health, security, energy, social sciences and humanities forming a key part of Horizon 2020, this is your chance to find out how you can get involved in shaping an ethically sound application and succeeding in meeting the requirements of the ethics review mechanisms set up at the EU level.

The new EU research programme – Horizon 2020 – which kicked off in January 2014, will introduce many novelties to the ethical aspects of the evaluation, selection and implementation of EU-funded research compared to the previous Framework Programme. Horizon 2020 will raise the level of ethical expectations in Europe’s science base and ensure a regular ethics check of research to guarantee its compliance with the relevant legal and ethical requirements. This special seminar will preview the main ethical challenges associated with the funding topics to be covered in the Horizon 2020 Programme, as well as discussing the new rules introduced in the application process, and presenting what makes a successful proposal from an ethical perspective.

EU officials and experienced researchers will discuss the best practices in the field; participants will furthermore have the opportunity to meet and connect with them. The seminar will be based on presentations, but will also integrate case studies and current examples to enable participants to acquire a broader understanding of the topic. This seminar aims to provide participants with a better understanding of how ethical requirements need to be met in the framework of the application and evaluation processes, how the ethics self-assessment needs to be approached and completed, and how to perform research in an ethically- and legally-sound way.

The objective of this seminar is to prepare and advise potential applicants and other stakeholders in the framework of Horizon 2020 on how to write a competitive project application.
