Introduction (2): Current Situation Overview
The self-employed status of lawyers in Belgium-based law firms is under scrutiny.
Government review and recent jurisprudence
The Belgian government has been conducting a review of the status of all (Belgian and non-Belgian) self-employed workers in Belgium. This review is considering whether, for social security/insurance purposes, self-employed workers should actually be treated instead as employees.
In one case involving an international law firm the issue of whether a lawyer was an employee or self-employed was considered by the Belgian courts.
