Leading global law firm Mayer Brown has appointed Antitrust and Competition partner, Jens Peter Schmidt, as partner-in-charge for Brussels, effective 1 June 2014. Mr Schmidt succeeds Kiran Desai, who led the Brussels office for almost two decades.

Mr Schmidt, who joined Mayer Brown in 2001, works in Mayer Brown's Brussels and Düsseldorf Antitrust and Competition practice advising clients on complex M&A merger control notifications before the European Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt). He also advises on cartel investigations, compliance matters and various state aid issues. As the new partner-in-charge, Mr Schmidt will continue to build on the capabilities of the Brussels office, working closely with the firm's offices across the Americas, Asia and Europe in order to provide a seamless cross-border service.

The Brussels office has a reputation for advising clients on EU law and the EU's institutions and courts across a range of practices including trade and customs, competition, regulatory and tax. Earlier this year, the office expanded its Antitrust and Competition capabilities with the recruitment of Julian Ellison from Ashursts.

Mr Desai, who continues to be an important player in the Brussels office, will focus on his antitrust practice and role as co-leader of Mayer Brown's India practice, and member of the Ethics & Loss Prevention, New Business Intake Committee and EU Pro Bono Committees.

Mr Schmidt said: "Mayer Brown has operated in Brussels for over 20 years and the office is now a hub for the firm's European trade, regulatory and competition practices. Working with colleagues across Europe, and those in other jurisdictions, we have an integrated approach to our clients' needs, particularly in the area of competition where there is increasing collaboration between the various authorities around the world. As partner-in-charge of the Brussels office, I look forward to continuing the work of my partner Kiran in order to further develop and integrate our capabilities across our core practices."
